Team AlUla Joins the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework
Team AlUla Championed by LeBron James - the all-electric powerboat racing team competing in the UIM E1 World Championship presented by PIF - has strengthened its commitment to climate action by becoming a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Sports for Climate Action Framework.
As a team competing in a championship that showcases the future of electric marine mobility, Team AlUla is committed to demonstrating how innovation, technology and sport can work together to accelerate positive environmental change.
The announcement builds on the team's wider sustainability strategy, ‘Powered by Data. Driven by Impact’, which harnesses data, technology and collaboration to create measurable, lasting impact.
By joining the Framework, Team AlUla becomes part of a global community of leading sports organisations and teams - including Formula 1, Formula E, the NBA, SailGP, the Premier League, the International Olympic Committee and World Athletics - working together to accelerate climate action through sport.
The team is also a signatory to the Sports for Nature Framework and supports a number of environmental initiatives, including an ongoing partnership with WATR, whose smart environmental monitoring technology helps collect water quality data at each E1 race venue.
As part of Team AlUla’s climate initiatives, the team supports the University of Reading's Climate Stripes campaign - also known across social media as ‘#ShowYourStripes’. The stripes are minimalist, color-coded vertical bars to show long-term global and regional temperature rises and feature on the Team AIUIa Racebird. Created in 2018 by Professor Ed Hawkins, the graphics use shades of blue for cooler years and red for hotter years to make climate data instantly understandable without words.
Next month, as the Championship heads to Luanda, Angola for its inaugural event, Team AlUla will partner with a local NGO to deliver a series of environmental and community focused projects ahead of the racing.
